Nathalie and Blake Crawford, long time members of the KZN Triathlon Family will act in the best interests of all athletes in the province moving forward

There is a dedicated email address that only they have privy to that members can email should they feel a need to make a submission or talk freely about a potential infringement they may have encountered. TRI KZN will adopt the blanket TSA policy on safeguarding

]]> KZN to HOST the National Duathlon Championships 2023 https://www.trikzn.co.za/kzn-to-host-the-national-duathlon-championships-2023/ Wed, 29 Mar 2023 11:47:32 +0000 https://www.trikzn.co.za/?p=3087 After a 2yr stint down in PE, the SA National Duathlon Champs will take place in the province of KZN at the MIDMAR DAM Resort on JULY 2nd 2023

KZN previously hosted the national duathlon championships at the same venue in 2017 and 2018 and its with a huge amount of excitement, that the national duathlon champs will return to the KZN Midlands in July

Entries will be done via the TSA process on the easyreg website. Details of this to come to provinces soon. Right now all you need to know is that the race will take place on SUNDAY 2nd JULY at MIDMAR DAM

Racing Proceedings are expected to get underway at 8am

Long distance (15km run – 60km cycle – 5k run)

Std Distance (10km run – 40km cycle – 5km run)

Sprint distance (Juniors 16-19yrs) (5km run – 20km cycle – 2.5km run)

Super Sprint distance (youth 12-15yrs) (2.5km run – 10km cycle – 1.25km run)

 

There is plenty of accommodation in and around the dam area – competitors can google MIDLANDS MEANDER and they will find an abundance of accommodation options. The Howick – KZN Midlands is one of the most scenic parts of SA and athletes from around SA will be drawn to the natural beauty of the area. The venue is also within driving distance for all the Central Gauteng, Free State and Tshwane Athletes so this will be a huge event for 2023 on the TSA official calendar.

Having previously hosted this even back in 2017 and 2018, duathletes will be returning to the KZN Midlands in JULY for what is expected to be an epic event.

The race will start at 8am on Sunday the 2nd JULY and will cover the usual race categories

The run course is held within the confines of the Dam Resort itself while the bike route is a 10km out and back loop on the R103 route. An undulating route, the stronger bikers will love it.

Billed as the national championships over the sprint distance, athletes from all over the country flocked to the hot and humid environment of the Free State.

In the ladies elite race Shanae Williams managed to walk away with the SA Sprint Championship title while Biddi Theunissen placed 3rd amongst the local SA Ladies on the day. On the men’s side with Henri Schoeman competing overseas at the moment, it was left to Jared Douglas in his first senior race to claim 16th spot amongst a very competitive international PRO Men’s field

In the Junior Race (billed as an African Cup Event – the SA Junior Champs are still to take place in PE in March) Kitty Ribbink walked away with the ladies win while Mikaela De Oliveira was coming home in 3rd spot. Nathan Foster claimed 3rd overall in the boys section in his 1st race as a Junior. Oliver Delport was a close 4th behind him

The Youth Race showed some great growth for the team at KZN with a notable number of youngsters going to their very first SA Champs event which was encouraging to see. Our young ladies did very well with Taylor Foster grabbing a 2nd place in the 12-13yr age category and Ava Moore (2nd) and Shayla Harvey (3rd) in the 14-15yr category.

In the age group race which took place earlier in the day, we had at least 2 gold medals, two 2nd places and a few other top 4 finishes.

Once again TEAM KZN leading from the front. Next up is the National Championships for Juniors and Age Groupers over the STD Distance on March 19th

Athletes on the HP  Team, along with their coaches and parents will have the PRIME HP Centre team in attendance to showcase the testing that each athlete had done at the start of the program and to match that up against the most recent testing protocol. This will show where the athletes have improved and where they can still improve

Once the talk is done- athletes will then face a time trial over a 750m swim followed a little later by a 5km running time-trial. Times achieved will then be used as a guide for each of the athletes as they attempt to reach the highest in performance with their sites firmly set on International Representation.

Triathlon KZN have taken a lead here and are intent on offering a support system to each of the athletes on the program. There is also a talent identifying process in place to potentially find the elusive “gem” that may be participating in another sport currently – to bring them over into the triathlon fold especially if they show great promise in the swim and running departments. Triathletes from KZN have been dominating the national scene for many years now, the recent SA Triathlon Championships that were staged in Bloemfontein where KZN scooped 5 of the 6 major titles up for grabs on race day proved this. The more recent African Champs held in Egypt also highlighted the KZN prowess in the Junior divisions both female and male. Henri Schoeman has been the SA no 1 for a good few years now and is based in Durban and he leads the Elite charge as does Gill Sanders (from KZN but residing in the UK) along with the new recruit Shanae Williams and a few other up and coming U23 triathletes.

PRIME are already involved with the Department of Sports and Recreation with an Elite EADP program of which KZN Triathlon has been a part of and will continue to be a part of for the foreseeable future. The KZN TRI High Performance Program we intend to launch will be an “in-house” extension of that program for the KZN triathletes that do not form part of the official EADP Program. We see it as a sort of “taking-up-the-slack” and ensuring that we don’t see any athletes fall through the cracks

The HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM will have 2 levels. TIER 1 Athletes – those that podiumed at the SA TRI CHAMPS and AFRICAN CHAMPS and then TIER 2 Athletes – athletes that are showing major promise as they gain experience with an eye of gaining some podium places in 2022.

We will look at the current athletes and closely monitor the program to ensure that these athletes continue to perform at the highest level. The program will also include a PDI initiative where we are going to identify budding athletes – put them on the program and nurture them towards significant gains in triathlon over all distances – from short distance right up to long distance

We will announce a formal launch soon with a host of potential sponsors coming on board to boost the program. This is an exciting time for the province of KZN as we strive to improve the level of competency amongst our elite triathletes from ages 12yrs and up.

Gillian, who originally hails from PMB and Henri down in Durban have been flying the flag for the last couple of years as the 2 most seasoned Elites in triathlon in this country. Henri was 3rd at the last Games and he will be aiming for better this time around. There are a host of events to choose from – the AQUABIKE being one of the newbies where athletes simply enter and SWIM then BIKE on race day – no run at this one. Team Relays are also very much encouraged to get the entire spectrum of athlete into the mix

KZN bagged no less than 4 titles with numerous other podium placings over the course of the 3 days racing.

Henri Schoeman bagged the Elite men’s title with a strong performance – showing he is ready for the Tokyo Olympics which is being held next month in Japan. Jack Spence (reigning SA JNR Champ) ran away from his competitors as he scooped the Junior Men’s title. Not to be outdone – Kira Ribbink, his fellow Junior KZN team mate won the Ladies Junior title in an impressive “race from the front” approach. On the last day of competition – Para Athlete Mhlengi Gwala managed to win his class during the para event – proving once again that KZN has some of the best triathletes in the country – well done TEAM KZN – we are very proud of you
